Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear….

We all love the drama. The fights, the hugs, the kisses, the tears, and most of all, the loneliness. We need it to substantiate our life. To make it  worthwhile. To make it seem special. We love the heart-break and the thousand songs about it. We love the divorce and the alcohol. We love the abuse so much that we cling onto it for dear life. Is it really worth the drama or is the drama really worth it? Why do we love to think that the world is crashing down upon our shoulders?

Who are we really trying to fool?

Our life does not lose meaning just because he or she left. In fact, they never left us. Its you who left. You left. You walked out on the love. You walked out on the joy. When it came, you drowned yourself in the alcohol. You shut your…

The Quirky Indian

Indyeah has resurfaced with another long (no surprises there!), well-meaning post that asks why we seem to be Punjabis, Jats, Malayalis, Yadavs, Dalits and Kannadigas, but not Indians. A post written, I suspect, more in hope, idealism and perhaps frustration than anything else.

So, who is an Indian? Ask me. I really don’t belong anywhere – including the place where my ancestors lived. At any place in India, wherever I go, my identity and acceptance –and therefore my ability to function as a normal human – seem to hinge on my speaking a particular language, or my belonging to a certain caste, a certain religion, a certain ethnicity. The boundaries of identity that we have been drawing around ourselves seem to be getting tighter and tighter, as we discover reason after reason for some new fissure, a fresh fracture. Ironically, the only place within India where…

Bhagarat Natyam

The above picture was taken from my Blackberry smartphone at the K-State International Fashion Show, erroneously so named since it was not merely fashion shown. Between every few acts there were comedians or dances. It would be more aptly named “International Culture Exhibition with a Heavy Emphasis on Fashion”. Ok, maybe not.

The dances were cool.

I really like India, so I took a picture of these two women performing, juxtaposing two distinct types of Indian dance. A few hours earlier, one of the performers, Jui, taught my Anthropology of the Arts class about the symbolism, near sign language, of Indian dance. She talked about how it can tell a story and express a feeling. The audience at the fashion show was told that this particular dance told a story about Lord Krishna.

I began to think about Christianity in India. Oftentimes, Hindus who convert to Christianity reject their culture…

nomadruss in words and photos

Still working through remnants of the trip to Delhi last fall, these images were made in the communities of Dakshinpuri and Madanpur Khadar. Dakshinpuri is a resettlement colony that was set up to relocate large slum colonies that were established when migrant workers came to Delhi looking for jobs. Madanpur Khadar is also known as JJ Colony. Most of these images were made in either colony adjacent to a Good Samaritan School, a school which exists to serve the poor, assisting families who would otherwise be unable to provide a good education for their children.

To read more about the work of the Good Samaritan School you can view an earlier post, Jamima’s Story.

The tour organizers I went with did a fabulous job of finding interesting places to visit on our trip to India. One of the places we went to  was a a local marble/gem manufacturer. We saw how gems are cut and polished by hand, an incredible process. Our workers at this plant all seemed to be young men.

They cut and polish emeralds, sapphires, rubies, lapis lazuli, turquoise, corals, garnets, amethysts, and topaz before these pieces can be inserted into marble inlay boxes and other items. Each of these marble inlay boxes is hand made and then adorned with these semi-precious stones. The process is painstaking with each stone, no matter how small, being individually placed. The value of the completed piece depends on the number of semi-precious stones inlaid.

Later these items are sold in the handicraft markets that seem to spring up in every city. Its definitely worthwhile…
